How to Update Sony Blu-Ray Firmware

Introduction

Installing firmware updates on your Sony Blu-ray player can add functionality and support for more file types, improve performance and resolve known software problems. You can install firmware updates over an Ethernet cable, or by downloading the files from the Sony eSupport site yourself, burning those files to a disc and then installing the update from the disc to your Blu-ray player. Firmware updates taken between 15 and 30 minutes to install, depending on your player and the size of the firmware update.

Update Sony Blu-Ray Firmware Using Ethernet Cable

1. Turn on the TV the Sony Blu-ray player is connected to and change the input so it displays the Blu-ray player.
2. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the LAN(100) port on the back of your Sony Blu-ray player and the other end to your router or modem.
3. Turn on the Sony Blu-ray player if it isn't on already and then open the player to check for any discs. If there are any discs in the player, remove them. You should see the XrossMediaBar (XMB) displayed on the TV screen.
4. Highlight "Startup" on the XMB and then press "Enter."
5. Highlight "Network Update" on the XMB and then press "Enter."
6. Select "OK" when a message appears on the screen asking if you want to update your Sony Blu-ray player's version and then press "Enter." The Blu-ray player begins downloading the firmware. After the download begins, the following text appears on the Blu-ray player's front panel display: DL */0. As the download progresses, the "0" in the text will work its way up until it displays DL */9.
7. After the download is finished, the DL */ text on the player's display changes to VUP */0 after the firmware update starts installing. Similar to what happened with the DL */ text during the update download, the number at the end of VUP */0 will work its way up to VUP */9. When the update is finished installing, the text FINISH will be displayed on the player's front panel display and the player will automatically power itself down.

Update Sony Blu-Ray Firmware Using Created Disc

1. Open your Web browser on your computer and navigate to Sony eSupport for Blu-Ray Disc Players. From this page, you can select your Sony Blu-ray player's series and model to get specific support for that player.
2. After navigating to your player's support page, select the "How To and Troubleshooting" tab for that player. Firmware updates for your specific player will be listed beneath System Updates/Firmware.
3. Click the firmware update you want to download to be redirected to an information page containing details about what is part of that specific firmware update.
4. Click the blue "Download Now" button in the upper-right corner of the firmware update's information page. An agreement page is displayed.
5. Click the blue "Accept Agreement" button and then select where you want to save the firmware update file to your computer and save the file.
6. Navigate to where the firmware update file is saved and then extract the contents of the file to a common folder. There will only be two files: a BIN file and an ID file.
7. Burn the two files to a disc and then finalize the disc. Finalizing the disc means that you set it up so that no more files can be burned to the disc. This is often done by checking a box that says something to the effect of "Burn as final."
8. Turn on the TV the Sony Blu-ray player is connected to and set it up to display the input the player is connected to.
9. Place the disc you created containing the firmware update files in the Blu-ray player.
10. Select "OK" and then press "Enter" when a message appears asking if you want to update your device's version.
11. The following text appears on the Sony Blu-ray player's display, indicating that the firmware update has started installing: VUP */. The number at the end of VUP */0 works its way up to VUP */9. When the update is finished installing, the text FINISH will be displayed.
12. Eject and remove the firmware update disc and then restart your Sony Blu-ray player.
