How to Troubleshoot Kindle Fire Problems

Try resetting your Kindle Fire if it's frozen.
Try resetting your Kindle Fire if it's frozen.
Source: Amazon

Introduction

The Kindle Fire is a multimedia powerhouse from Amazon that lets you load your favorite movies, music, books, apps and more to the device, in addition to surfing the Web. Various problems can make certain parts of the Kindle Fire difficult to use or even cripple the entire device. Common problems with the device include a frozen screen, battery problems, failure to receive a converted file and problems with a computer recognizing the Kindle Fire when it's connected. Work to resolve these issues on your own using troubleshooting before seeking professional support.

Frozen Screen

You have a couple of different options if your Kindle Fire screen is frozen or locked and won't respond to any actions:

1) Perform a hard reset. Don't panic, this is not the type of hard reset that restore's your device's factory settings. This just cuts off any programs that are currently running and shuts down the device so you can restart it again later. Hold down the "Power" button for at least 20 seconds and then remove your finger from the button. Wait for a few seconds and then press the "Power" button to turn on your Kindle Fire.

2) Charge your Kindle Fire's battery. A low battery is a known cause of Kindle Fire screens locking up.

3) Update your Kindle Fire operating system to the most recent version. The device can lock up if you are using programs meant to run on a newer version of the operating system on an older version of the Kindle Fire's operating system. Updates for the device are available here.

Not Receiving Converted Files

There are various reasons you may not be receiving a file on your device that you submitted to Amazone to be converted into the Kindle-friendly format:

1) The e-mail address you used to send the file to Amazon may not be on the Amazon-approved e-mail list to accept files from. Ensure that this e-mail address has been added through the Manage Your Kindle section on the Kindle Fire.

2) If Wi-Fi is not enabled on your Kindle Fire, you won't be able to receive the document from Amazon. If you haven't set up your Wi-Fi, you'll need to do this.

3) Ensure that you suppled the correct Sent-to-Kindle e-mail address for Amazon to mail the converted file to. This name will be something similar to "xxx@kindle.com"

4) The file you are trying to convert may not be capable of being converted. File types that can't be converted to a supported format by the Kindle Fire include: unprotected PDF and MOBI files, TXT, PRC natively, HTML, DOC, RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP.

5) The converted file may have been funnelled to your Junk Mail or other similar folder.

Computer Doesn't Recognize Kindle Fire

1) Unplug the Kindle Fire from the USB port it's currently connected to and try using a different USB port or a different USB cable.

2) If the computer still won't recognize the device, disconnect it again and then restart the Kindle Fire. Try reconnecting the Kindle Fire to the computer.

3) Ensure you're using a high-power USB port. High-power USB ports are typically on the back or front of most computer towers, or if you're using an all-in-one computer, the back of the monitor. Devices connected to low-power USB ports often aren't recognized by the operating system and are typically located on the keyboard or on the sides of a standard monitor.

4) If the computer still isn't recognizing the Kindle Fire, leave the device connected to the computer and then restart it.

5) If the computer is still blind to your Kindle Fire, disconnect the Kindle Fire and perform a hard reset as described in the Frozen Screen section.

General Battery Problems

Perform a hard reset as described in the Frozen Screen section if the device isn't charging. This closes all running programs and clears the device's cache. If the battery is not lasting as long as you'd like, disable functionality you aren't using that drains the battery faster, such as Wi-Fi. Alternatively, transferring a massive amount of files to the device can be a drain on the battery even after adding the files, as the device still may be indexing them. There is nothing you can do about this, and you'll need to wait until the files are indexed.

Supported Files Don't Play

The file type may be supported by the Kindle Fire, but the file may be wrapped in a codec that isn't supported by the device. If you converted the file yourself, try reconverting the source file to the same file type but select a different codec to wrap the file in. Even if you don't have the source file, try re-converting the file and wrapping it in a different codec. You may lose quality by doing this, but the file may play on the device. If you don't have an audio or video converting program, free converters such as Any Video Converter and Any Audio Converter make converting files and selecting new codecs easy.

Kindle Fire Won't Charge at All

This is often the sign of a deeper problem with your device, such as the device suffering a major jolt that jiggled some of internal components loose or broke internal components, or the device overheating, which resulted in some of the internal components actually melting, rendering the device unusable. Contact Amazon Support as soon as possible to see if your device is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty. If it is, Amazon should give you the option to send it back for a replacement device. However, if your device is out of warranty, you'll need to purchase a new device. There's always the chance that even after suffering damage, your Kindle Fire may resume working again at some point, but it will likely be incredibly unstable and you should still contact Amazon as soon as possible, describe your problem and work to get a replacement device.

Question Mark on Battery Icon

If a question mark appears on top of your Kindle Fire's battery icon, this is a warning from the device that it isn't properly detecting and displaying the level of power left in the battery, and that your battery may run out or last longer than what is indicated on the battery icon. Try updating your Kindle Fire's firmware to resolve this issue. If that doesn't work, restore the Kindle Fire to its factory settings. While the first option may work, restoring the factory settings resolves this issue almost every time. This problem doesn't signify deeper issues with your device; it's just a quirk in the device's software.

how do i remove the x from my wifi on my kindle fire.

Max Dalton 4 months ago

Hi Ed,

Do you have devices physically connected to the router you're attempting to connect to wirelessly on your Kindle Fire? If so, try disconnecting those, rebooting your router and then reconnecting. Also, if you have a lot of wireless devices in your home, try disconnecting some of those from the network, rebooting the router, rebooting the Kindle Fire and then connecting with your Kindle Fire. Can you connect to other wireless networks? If not, make sure all of your personal information is backed up on your device and then restore it to its factory settings. From there you can re-load your personal stuff. If you still can't connect to a Wi-Fi network, I'd contact someone at Amazon. While I suspect one of the above options will work for you, it may be a larger issue that can only be resolved through an update from Amazon. Drop back by here and let me know what you find out.

Best,

Max

We just got a Kindle Fire for my daughter this Christmas and she loves it, now I can have my iPad back, lol. Good hub max, voted up and useful.

Hey Eddie. Yeah, I work with some people who bought tablet PCs for their kids so they could get the tablet PC they originally bought for themselves back. Too funny, lol.

Kindle fire shut off and won't turn on again.

Max Dalton 4 months ago

Hi Chris,

The outlet you're trying to charge it through may be dead. I'd try using an AC outlet that you know works or try using a different charging cable in case yours is defective. Also, leave the device plugged into the AC outlet for at least half an hour before trying to turn it on. Also, have you dropped the device recently or has it taken a jolt? Some of the internal components and circuitry may have been rattled around and something internally may be broken. Also, try holding down the Power button for five to 10 seconds when turning it on instead of just quickly pressing the button.

If you do get the device to turn on again, make sure you update the software version to the most recent version. Software updates don't just add features and functionality, they also address known performance issues with your device.

I hope this helps. Check back and let us know what worked if you get it resolved.

Best,

Max.

Fafel 4 months ago

Hi Max,

Got a kindle fire that won't turn on. Just got it for Xmas. Tried the reset, and nothing. Any suggestions before taking it back?

Max Dalton 4 months ago

Hi Fafel,

If someone else you know has a Kindle Fire charging cable, try using it to see if it charges your device in case your battery is dead because your cable is actually defective. Also, you may want to just try leaving the device connected to AC power for an evening and then try powering the device on the next morning. That's about all I've got. Any chance you had it exposed to some extreme temperatures for an extended period of time, or dropped it or gave it a hard bump? Any of those could have damaged internal components or circuitry that may prevent the device from working properly again. If you do get the device going again, make sure your firmware is up to date. Updating the firmware does more than add new features, it also improves functionality and addresses known problems, such as the one you may be experiencing.

Hope this helps. Let me know what you end up doing.

Max Dalton 4 months ago

Hi Bart,

Tap the Gear icon on the Status taskbar. Make sure the icon to the far left doesn't say Locked. If it does, tap it until it says Unlocked. This locks and unlocks your ability to rotate your screen. I suspect yours is locked.

Hi Kaela,

Weird problem. See if a firmware update is available for your device. You may try resetting your wireless router to see if that works. Let us know if any of that works.

While I was reading a book, my kindle fire just shut down and will not turn back on. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Josh,

I haven't experienced with the one I test on at work. However, it looks like other people who have experienced this say it's a result of the device overheating and cooking some of the internal components. It also look like those people contacted Amazon and shipped them a new device, I'm suspecting free of charge because it's still covered by the warranty and it's a component failure. Sorry there's no troubleshooting trick for this that I'm aware of. I'm sure there's something you could do if you could access the device's inner components without voiding the warranty, but unfortunately that's not the case.

Best,

Max.

Aaron 3 months ago

The last two books I've downloaded from the store don't work, it gives me the title in the top left, and no matter how many times I scroll to another page, that's all I get. It's very frustrating

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Aaron,

Delete the books from your device and then reboot your device. Sometimes these types are problems are just the result of an internal glitch that can be resolved by removing them and rebooting. If after rebooting and re-downloading the titles you're still experiencing this problem, it may be a problem with the file and not a problem with your device. If that happens, contact Amazon and wait for their response about the files. This doesn't sound like the type of problem where you'd need to format your device to resolve it, but that's your final option.

Amazon has really hit a lot of bumps in the road with this tablet. I just hope they learn something before releasing a new device.

How do I get my wireless network to unlock? There is a lock symbol beside my Wi-Fi symbol, my Kindle is registered and now I'm not able to connect to the internet.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi John,

That's a weird problem you're experiencing. It sounds weird, but if you haven't rebooted your device in a while, do that first. Next, I'd see if a software update is available; if an update is available, install it. If nothing else works, back up your device, format it and then reload everything to it. It's a hassle, but sometimes that's the only way to shake things like this.

I hope that helps. Let me know if none of that works for you.

Hey max. My kindle fire wont charge or turn on. I had it on charger more than an hour. Still wont turn on. Tried hard reset. Still doesnt work. Charger is good. Charges other devices . Any idea?

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Marvin,

I think I addressed this in an earlier comment, but there is an issue with the Kindle Fire overheating and some of the internal components actually melting, which obviously makes it impossible to use the device; I suspect this is what's wrong with your device. I've read that Amazon is aware of this and if you contact Amazon Customer Support, which I know can be a royal pain in the neck, they will replace the device for free without much fuss. It sounds like that's the route you need to take. There are probably some short term things you can do to get the device to turn back on very briefly, but ultimately you're only delaying the inevitable.

All the best,

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Lyla,

Someone you let use the device may have locked the Wi-Fi, or you may have locked it on accident while setting up parental restrictions for other users. You can unlock the Wi-Fi aspect of the device by tapping "Settings" and then "Wi-Fi." You'll likely to be prompted to enter any kind of restriction password you set up on the device. That's about the only reason I can think that it would be locked.

Best,

Max.

Got Kindle Fire last week and have loved it since we got it...however, yesterday it started acting oddly. While at a family member's house it had a hard time connecting to the WIFI....then once it did is was very slow. That wasn't a real problem, though it hadn't done that before. Everything was fine at home all night til the very end when I was on the web look at Target.com and it pushed me out of the website back to the carousel. Tried to get back in, did it again. Tried a different website....again. The wifi is connected...even has almost full bars of connectivity. Tried the same thing at another wifi location; same. Connects to wifi fine, lets us in Amazon store, etc....but won't let us on web....what's going on? Thanks so much for your help! Janelle

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Janelle,

I haven't experience this before. However, if you haven't restarted the device since you started experiencing the problem, try that first. If you're still having problems, try forgetting all of your Wi-Fi networks and then only reconnecting to new ones as you use them. For one reason or another, the device may be confused. See if an update is available for your device; if one is, install it.

I hope that helps.

Hi my kindleFire has a ? on the battery. What is that suppose to mean? Help.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Nicki,

I haven't experience this problem, but I did some digging around online and it looks like this is a warning that your Kindle Fire isn't detecting the charge level of your battery properly. I found some advice from Amazon Support that suggests resetting the device if that happens. However, I'd recommend installing any available updates and seeing if that resolves the problem before doing anything else.

It doesn't sound like this is a huge problem, but it could lead to bigger problems.

Reset my kindle fire to factory setting. I had some downloaded music. How do I get it back ( p.s it was not in the cloud)

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Coco,

You should be able to re-download it to your device at no cost. I don't have any purchased music on the one I use, so I can't testify to that, but that's how it should work.

To prevent this from happening in the future, always back up your device before you restore the factory settings so you can use the backup to restore your personal information back to the device after the factory recovery.

Hello Max, when i plug in my charger or connect my fire to a pc via usb, it shuts down.

Other people are having the same problem, but I cant find a solution.

I tried reboot, hard reboot, restore to factory defaults, different cables, everything. I cant turn it on while it is charging with the power cable that came with the fire, and it also shuts off if i connect it to my pc with my kindle keyboard usb cable.

my kindle fire will not detect the charger at first i thought it was the charger but when i tried it on a cell phone it worked perfectly fine what should i do?

Max Dalton 3 months ago

If the battery was completely run down when you plugged it in, plug it back in and wait for 15 minutes for a charging icon to appear. If the battery was completely dead, charging notifications don't always appear automatically on devices.

Also, if the device just suddenly wouldn't turn on, the battery may not be dead, but rather internal components may be damaged as a result of the device overheating, preventing it from powering on. Because your device should still be under warranty, contact Amazon and explain your problem. It's likely they'll exchange yours for a replacement.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Fernando,

It sounds like you're on the ball. I'd recommend seeing if there's a software update available for your device. If there is, install it. If that doesn't work, it's likely just a malfunction on the part of the device and you'll need to contact Amazon about a replacement. Your device is likely still under warranty, so there shouldn't be any cost to you.

Kimberly 3 months ago

HI Max:

My issues may be similar to John's. I have WiFi access; I'm successfully getting Pandora; however I no longer get any Web Pages to load. I believe I cleared History. Could that have caused the pages to stop loading? I have done a 20 second reset; fully charged and did another 20 second resert; checked for new updates (none). Any advice on what to do?

Warmly, K

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Kimberly,

I honestly have no clue why this is happening. However, we have an issue in my house where sometimes our older laptops detect what looks like a full signal but we can't open Web pages. We can fix the problem by disconnecting the power from the wireless router for about 10 seconds and then reconnecting the power cable. After the wireless router gets back up and running, the Internet works just fine. It sounds silly, but you may wanna give that a try. Your last resort is to back up your Kindle Fire, do a factory reset and then load your backup to your device to restore your files.

Sorry I couldn't be more of a help. It's a quirky problem that I haven't experienced. Let me know what happens. If it doesn't work, maybe we can come up with something else.

Best,

Max.

My Kindle Fire isn't turning on or charging. I purchased it one week ago.Up until now it was working fine. i was reading my book when i noticed the battery was almost dead so i turned it off. when i got home i tried to charge it but the orange light wouldn't come on and i wasn't able to power it up. Can you help me?

Max Dalton 3 months ago

I'm gonna guess the device is completely run down by now. If it hasn't, try updating the firmware. I know I keep banging that drum in these comments, but that's one of the easiest things people can do to try and resolve problems. If it is dead, let it sit overnight and then try connecting it to the charger the next day; sometimes weird things like letting the battery run completely down can bring it back to life. Also, if you do plug the charger in after the battery runs completely dead, let the charging icon probably won't appear right away and you need to leave it plugged in and sitting for 15 minutes. At that point, some indication that it's charging should be evident. If none of that works, you probably need to contact Amazon about getting a new device. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Chris,

This is a known problem, from what I can read, and Kindle tried to address it through an update. Update your device to the most recent version, reboot it and see if that helps. The bad news is that beyond updating your device there doesn't appear to be much you can do if you're still experiencing it. It's one of those things that Kindle is probably going to need to release another update for that resolves the problem by the people who are still experiencing it. If you're feeling crazy, you can back up your device, restore the factory settings and then restore your device from the backup. It sounds silly, but that may work, for one reason or another. Sometimes you just have to kick the system in the teeth and start from scratch.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Courtney,

There's been a rash of these things overheating. Any chance you used it -- a lot? If you did, you may have actually caused some of the components inside the device to start melting, which eventually causes the device to operate inconsistently and eventually causes the device to not work at all. Remember the Xbox 360 overheating problem? These companies are cramming lots of stuff in small packages, and if used for long periods of time, you're likely going to run into problems. The device should still be under warranty. Contact Amazon and explain your problem. You should be able to send it back and get a replacement.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

When the battery gets so low, try plugging it in to charge and letting it sit for 15 minutes. It may not look like it's doing anything, but it should be charging. If it doesn't function like it should after 15 minutes, you've got problems, most likely with the battery, obviously. I'd contact Amazon about getting a replacement, which should be covered by your warranty.

Dear Max,

How many times do you have to answer the same question when people won't read previous comments? Just wondering?

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Roger,

Lol. I'm finding myself doing it a lot lately. I just open the comments, search them and then copy and paste. No big thing. I am going to incorporate some of those into the end of the article at some point to make it easier for people to find answers to some problems I don't directly address in the article.

Best,

Max.

Roger 3 months ago

You have more patience than I. They won't read that either. If you've ever watched Britain's Prime Minister question sessions on CSPAN, he always says, "Please refer to response I've given just moments ago". Anyway, my Fire works perfectly, installed GO Launcher EX and love how that works. Only need to look at Amazon's "carousal" when I want to change to a new book in Bookshelf.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Roger,

I actually work in the multimedia department at a pretty large publishing company, and we have one for general use we use to test our content on. It's a pretty slick thing. I like the iPad better, but the Kindle Fire is pretty cool. As evidenced by the comments on this hub, however, there are a lot of people who are having issues with it. The biggest one I've heard about lately is the apparent overheating. It reminds me of the initial release of the Xbox 360 where people where user it for long periods of time and the internal components started melting, which resulted in the red ring of death. I think Amazon has a lot of kinks to work through, but overall it's a solid device. However, I still think they have a big uphill fight to just maintain market share against the iPad.

All the best,

Max.

Roger 3 months ago

I agree, esp. with no BlueTooth/possibility for external keyboard, mike, etc. Rumor has it, also, that Apple is none too happy with the 18% or so market share Kindle Fire has captured in the tablet arena & is developing a smaller iPad. But the Fire is what it is for now - overused cliche - and for the price is a fine device. Thanks for you comments.

Is there any way to fix a kindle's damaged screen. Half of the screen on my son's kindle remains blank at all times.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi iruvanti,

That's a bit out of my realm, lol. I suspect he may have knocked it around a bit too hard, or there was some weight on that half of the screen at some point that may have caused it. I don't know if that would be the result of a software problem, so I don't think resetting or restoring would do anything. I think it may be the result of some kind of hardware problem. Your best bet is likely to call Amazon support and just have it replaced. It should be free because the device will still be covered by the warranty.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Denise,

I use the Kindle Fire at work to test on, so I haven't really tinkered with the Facebook app on it, so I'm not going to speculate regarding why you're not seeing any pictures. However, I know that the app isn't native and it just redirects you to Facebook's website, so the problem is probably with how your device's Settings are set up. To try resolving both of your problems, try turning off plug-ins, un-checking Accelerated Page Loading and switching to Mobile instead of Desktop view. That will definitely speed up your device and you may even find pictures being displayed in Facebook.

Let me know how that works. Also, please check for an update to the device, and if there is one, install it.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Ruth,

I'd try a different cable. Also, if you can connect the Kindle Fire to a PC, update it.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Michelle,

Try tinkering with the plug-ins that are enabled in the device's Settings. Also, make sure you change from viewing the Desktop version of websites to the Mobile version in the Settings screen.

Sorry I can't be much more of a help. I haven't experienced this.

Best,

Max.

Omg that totally worked. Thank u so much. I never found the plug in thingy.. :/ but all the otjer worked, if u dont mind me asking what is the differance between mobile and desktop?

Thank you again.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Denise,

Glad that resolved your problem. Some websites have a version that's optimized for mobile devices in addition to the standard one that's optimized for desktop computers. The only problem I've ever seen with using the desktop version on a mobile device is that it's a pain in the butt to zoom in on everything; I've never seen some of the images get stripped away like you're describing. When you access websites on a mobile device, most websites detect that you're using a mobile device and automatically detect you to the mobile version of the site.

Again, glad it worked. Stopped back by if you run into any other problems and I'll do my best to help.

I have reset my kindle fire password....and now i don't remember it...what do i do???

Sam 3 months ago

This website helps a lot!! Thanks!!

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Sam,

I'm glad it helped. I think there's it's morphed into something where there's more value in the comments than in the actual article, lol. Share it with anyone having problems, and have them leave a comment if they can't find what they're looking for and I'll do my best to answer their problem.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Angela,

This is new territory for me. It looks like you'll have to keep taking a crack at your password until eventually a message appears that says you need to restore your device to its factory settings. At that point, you have to restore the device to its factory settings. I suspect you can let it sit for a while and try again later; I've never taken it to that point. The one I use doesn't have a password on it, so this isn't a problem.

Sorry for the bad news.

Max.

Kimberly 3 months ago

Me, again, Max, with an update.

We reset the router several times. That didn't help, so I sent a message to Amazon. They said they'd respond in 12 hours and they did! The responder told me to ". . . reset the device, then please clear the browsing history on the Kindle Fire device. To clear your browsing history, tap the Menu icon at the bottom of the page, select History, then Clear All at the top of the screen."

Unfortunately, because I can't get to the web, I can't get to Amazon Silk and the screen with the Menu icon. So, I am emailing them another response.

The responder added that if the fix did not work, it is likely they will have to troubleshoot with a phone call and probably replace my Kindle Fire :(

I will keep you informed.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Kimberly,

Sorry to hear that. Maybe the tech can resolve it over the phone, but I suspect he's just going to verify that you walked what they told you to do in the e-mail correctly. At least you don't have to pay anything for the replacement and you just have to go without it for a week. I hope Amazon is learning a lot from the problems they've had with the Kindle Fire and working to incorporate that knowledge into the next iteration of the device.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Max.

Hi Max

I bought my kindle a month ago. When I first got it I noticed it took longer to boot up than I expected, but didn't realize until a friend of mine started theirs. Which was almost instant. Other than that there are no other problems. Is there something wrong? Should I consider trying to exchange it?

Courtney 3 months ago

Hi Max,

I bought 2 books on my Kindle Fire today, and it said"Cannot complete download." So, I tried to purchase it again. It said "you have already purchased this product, please go to your library to download." So, I went to my library (device and cloud) but they weren't there. So, I tried restarting, syncing, checking wifi, went on amazon.com on my laptop & bought it again and it said it was on my kindle. I went through the process, but the two books are nowhere to be found. Help!!!!

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi krystalo91,

I know it sounds weird, but go into Settings and disable Accelerated Page Loading. Also, disable any plug-ins you don't see yourself actually using. Save your changes and then restart you Kindle Fire. Your Web browsing experience should speed up at least a little.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Courtney,

I haven't experienced this, but I did some digging around online and it looks like it could be the result of a few different things. First, make sure you're using the Amazon account the book was purchased under. Second, when looking for it, elect to view All instead of just Books. Evidently, some books don't appear under Books.

If neither of those work, your best bet is to contact Amazon Support. I have heard about a lot of cases where some purchased books just disappear.

Best,

Max.

I haven't had any issues with the kindle fire until now. It froze and won't respond to anything. I also can't turn it off or on and I tried to hard reset it...I don't know what to do. Please help

mary 3 months ago

How do I delete one of my status updates on facebook?

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Steven,

I'd just let the battery run down; it should restart after that. When that happens, I'd back it up, then restore it to the factory settings and then restore it from the backup. After that, update it to the most recent version. If it's an internal software quirk, it shouldn't happen again anytime soon -- hopefully. If it does happen again, you've got bigger fish to fry and you need to contact Amazon about getting a replacement device while it's still under warranty.

Hope that helps.

Max.

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Mary,

I love technology, but I really don't like Facebook -- and I don't use Facebook on the Kindle Fire I have access to. However, I do know that the Facebook app on the Kindle Fire isn't anything special -- it just points you to the Facebook Web page. If you're looking at the desktop version of Facebook, you'd do it the same way you would on a desktop computer. I honestly do mess with the mobile version, so if that's what you're looking at, I'm afraid I can't help. Again, I'm not a Facebook fan and use it as little as possible.

Best,

Max.

Shawn Simon 3 months ago

Max,

My wife got a kindle fire for Christmas, but because we didn't have an Internet connection, she would download a bunch of apps off the marketplace and books on Amazon at a friend's house and use them offline at home. After a month of occasional use, every program began to tell her it needed an internet connection to run, even books and games that had ran just fine offline before. Recently we had internet installed at home, and even after she installed every update, the problem still persists unless she turns on her wifi. Why must we basically need the internet in order to use the kindle fire, when it wasn't the case for the first month we used it?

Thanks

Max Dalton 3 months ago

Hi Shawn,

You opened the floodgates. Some apps require the Internet, but I would think if that were the case, they would have acted up before. Silly question, but have you restarted the device? Sometimes that helps. Also, did you update the firmware? That's another thing.

Best,

Max.

Hello Max,

My kindle fire wont turn on no matter what. It was working really good for the last month then this. I am currently charging it but im not surer if when its done charging if i will be able to turn it on. What should i dont because i dont really want to get a new one. how can i turn it back on after it finishes charging because i been trying to do this for days.

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Bryan A,

It sounds like it may have overheated and the internal components are fried. It may come back to life, but I doubt for very long. You're best bet is to get in touch with Amazon while it's still under warranty and just send it back for a replacement.

Best,

Max.

Ali 2 months ago

You know how you can turn your kindle fire in any direction? Well mine is like stuck on the left side. How do I fix it?

Kimberly 2 months ago

Final update, Max.

I just found time to call Amazon - or request a call, as they do it - and the CS Rep walked me through a Factory Reset, so I can access Amazon Silk, again. Fortunately for me, I hadn't put any personal content, docs, on it, so I didn't have to do a back up.

Now, I have more than a $200 portable radio :)

Warmly, Kimberly

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Ali,

Tap the Gear icon on the Status taskbar. Make sure the icon to the far left doesn't say Locked. If it does, tap it until it says Unlocked. This locks and unlocks your ability to rotate your screen. I suspect yours is locked.

Let me know if that doesn't work.

Best,

Max.

Hi Kimberly,

I hope they're at least sending you a new one???

kelly 2 months ago

Half of my screen is black when I try to go on the web

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Jeff,

I haven't experienced this with the one I use at work. I did some digging around and it looks like this is a hardware issue. Other people recommend leaving it charge in for a 24-hour cycle to see if you can get light to go green and other people suggest plugging it in to the computer for a bit to see if it doesn't return to normal. Also, let the battery run all the way down, let it sit for a few hours and then plug it back in for charging. In the end, there may be a problem with the connector, and your best option then is to contact Amazon.

Best,

Max.

Hi Max,

Please help ! My MP4 videos play with no sound on Fire. They have sound when play at my computer. Thanks a lot !

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Kim,

There's probably nothing wrong with either the MP4 file you're using or your Kindle Fire. In all likelihood, the codec associated with the MP4 file you're trying to play doesn't play nice with the Kindle Fire. If you converted the file to MP4 yourself and then loaded it to the Kindle Fire, try converting the source file to an MP4 using another converter program, such as Any Video Converter. I use Any Video Converter regularly and have found it's pretty good freeware. However, I haven't converted any videos to MP4 and then loaded them to the Fire to see if they work, but I do know that program gives you multiple codec options when creating MP4 files. If you don't still have the source file the MP4 was converted from, you can try converting the MP4 to an MP4 with a different codec. I don't know if that will do anything for you, but it's worth a shot. You may lose some quality, but it may play.

Let me know if none of that works and I'll see if I can think up something else.

Best,

Max.

Kim 2 months ago

Hi Max. I have the same issue as Shawn. All games are requiring internet access to be played. I tried turning it off and on. That didn't change anything. Also I have the latest firmware. I couldn't find anything online about this issue other than Shawn's comment . Any other suggestions? Thanks, Jeff C.

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi kelly,

Sorry for the delayed response. Update the firmware. If that doesn't work, I'd back up your device, restore the factory settings and then restore the device from the backup.

Max.

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Jeff,

I use the Kindle Fire we have at work as a reference, and unfortunately I'm not near it right now. Try completely disabling the Wi-Fi and seeing if your device still prods you to connect to the Internet to use the app. It may want you to connect because you're in the range of a wireless network. We always leave it connected at work, so we don't have this problem.

Let me know if that doesn't work and I'll revisit the issue.

Hi Max.

I have a serious problem. I installed in my kindle fire the application FingerPrint Security. But when i turn it on, show me this message: "Sorry. The application FingerPrint Security (process com.security.finger_print_scanner) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". and repeats indefinitely. Do you have any idea what I can do?

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Daniel,

Does this happen when you launch the app after you reboot the device? If so, I'd suggest removing the app and then ensuring you're device is updated. If you did install an update for your device, try installing and using that specific app again. If it's still giving you fits, try backing up the device, restoring its factory settings, restoring the backup to the device and then reinstalling and running that specific app. Ultimately, it may just be a problem with that app that came about as a result of an update, so you'll need to wait for the app maker to update the app.

Hi

I just bought a Kindle Fire. When I try to load mobi files on it through my laptop , it doesnt show on my kindle .

But when i emailed the books to the amazon id , they show.

Please help me. It is really cumbersome trying to send almost 5GB worth books via email !!!

Daniel 2 months ago

Hi Max. Thanks for responding. The problem is that I can only see that message, even after reboot the device. I can't access the settings of the Kindle. I can't remove the app, or restore it to its factory settings. Or at least i don't know how to do it.

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Sharadha,

Sometimes content doesn't transfer to the part of your device where you think it should. For example, sometimes books transfer to the Personal Documents section and not books. Check all of the folders to see if it went somewhere else. I know MOBI files have a tendency to get placed in Personal Docs.

Let me know if that doesn't help.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Daniel,

I'm sure you've already done these, but when it does this, hold down the "Power" button to force it to shut down, then restart it and see what happens. If that doesn't work, force the device to shut down, connect it to the computer you use it with and then power it on. Sometimes quirky things like that help it resolve problems.

You can restore the device's factory settings by selecting "Quick Settings," "More," "Device" and then "Reset to Factory Defaults."

Let me know if any of that helps.

Best,

Max.

Hello Max. I have recently purchased a kindle fire. I bought it on base in alaska. Every time i try to download anything from the app store it tells me that the app is not available. no matter if it is a book or game. nothing will download to my kindle fire.

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Veronica,

I'd leave it powered off and disconnect it from a charging cable for at least 24 hours and then see how things are working. See if an update is available. If you're still experiencing problems, perform a factory reset. If you're still experiencing problems after that, the overheating may have damaged internal components and you'll need to contact Amazon about replacing your device.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 2 months ago

Hi Monica,

I haven't experienced this problem, so I'm kind of shooting from the hip. I would back up the device, perform a factory reset and start from scratch. Without getting my hands on your Kindle Fire, it's hard to say what exactly is causing this, but that should get the device back to functionality.

Hi, I didn't see a comment similar to a problem I just had with my Kindle Fire: it would not power on, even though I last left it with a charge, and plugging in the charger made no difference anyhow, but after about two solid minutes of holding the power button down, it restarted. No data loss as far as I can see so far.

I read through the comments and read about the known issue of the Kindle Fire OVERHEATING, which would be funny, but it isn't since $200 is hard to come by these days. I'm not the Unabomber or anything, and enjoy these technologies, but it seems like consumers tolerate a lot of flaky electronics on the market these days. Maybe it's the invisible hand they speak of in Washington.

Hi E,

Yeah, it sounds like the iPad 3 is on track for a similar problem. I think CNET or someone tested it, and I can't recall the temperature it hit, but it seemed unreasonably hot, so much so that it would affect the user experience. It amazes me how no one seems to care about cooling these things.

Hi,

I got a kindle fire for Christmas and it has worked fine until now. I plugged it in to charge and the light lit up for all of about 4 seconds before going out and now it won't charge at all.

Marissa 6 weeks ago

And the indicator light on the power button doesn't light up at all...

Max Dalton 6 weeks ago

Hi Marissa,

Let the battery in the device run down all the way, if it isn't already run down. Did you notice that the device felt extremely hot for long periods of time when you were using it? If so, overheating the device on a regular basis can damage internal components and result in the tablet not working or not working properly. Alternatively, did the tablet suffer a hard bump or does it take a lot of minor bumps on a regular basis? If so, internal components can be damaged as a result of this. If possible, exchange your Kindle Fire at the place where you bought it for a new one. If that's not possible, contact Amazon support and see if your device is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

Hope that helps.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 6 weeks ago

Hi priscilla,

Try resetting your wireless router by disconnecting the power cable from it, waiting a few minutes, reconnecting it and powering it back on. Also, try turning off any other devices that are connected to your wireless connection that are powered on. Also, in the wireless network settings on your Kindle Fire, ensure you've selected the correct security that corresponds with your wireless router.

Let me know if this doesn't work and I'll see what else I can drum up.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 6 weeks ago

Hi priscilla,

Have you tried restoring the device to its factory settings? It's a bit of an extreme measure, but if nothing else is working, that can sometimes solve your problem.

Do you know anyone else with a Kindle Fire? If so, consider having them come over and attempting to connect their device to your Wi-Fi.

Best,

Hi Amy,

I'd try restoring the factory settings and seeing if that works. A firmware update may also do the trick. I know I say those things a lot, but those should be your first options in this case.

Best,

Max.

Max Dalton 4 weeks ago

Hi Nikolaus,

It may have been roughed up in travel and actually has a hardware issue. If that's the case, your best bet is to see if you can return it while it's still covered by the manufacturer. However, in the meantime you can try leaving it like that until the battery runs down. Wait a few hours and then try booting it up again. You never know; that may work. Outside of that, I can't think of anything you can do if you can't get it to boot up.

Sorry.

I like to pin my books and apps to the "shelves" below and remove them from the carousel when not in use. For some reason, whenever I reboot, some or all of the books are placed back onto the carousel. Have you experienced this issue?

Max Dalton 3 weeks ago

Here's a response I gave someone else in this thread about this issue:

I am hoping this is an easy question. Once you go onto Gmail the Kindle will not allow you to close out of it. You can turn off the unit but when turned back on, the Gmail opens up again. How can you turn it off so the password protects my email from anyone gaining access to it?

Hi Todd,

Unfortunately, I can't address this issue, as I don't use the e-mail on the device. Maybe someone else reading this thread can chip in on this.

Sorry.

Max.

Hi Heath,

This was an issue on some devices prior to a recent update. Update the firmware on your device to see if that resolves your keyboard problem.

Best,

Max.

Hi Kathy,

Unfortunately, I haven't experienced this issue and would hate to give you bad advice for resolving this. Update your Fire's firmware and try doing this again. If that doesn't work, I would recommend contacting Amazon.

Best,

Max.

Hi Dru,

Let the battery run completely down and then plug it into the charger and let it sit overnight. After that, then try restoring the factory settings to resolve your problem.

Best,

Max.

Max-Thanks for all your help. I didn't notice any questions about hotmail. Is there a way to turn it off or only sign in when you want to access it?I don't like it being accessible to anybody that picks it up.

We purchased a KF less then a month ago. If I plug it in to charge, in no time it will say Kindle Fire on the screen, overheat, then the fan starts up and runs, and tells me there isn't enough battery to use. But, I'm afraid to leave it plugged in because it' overheating way too fast.

Hello Max

My issue is that an unwanted website pops up whenever I open up another website. I cleared cache cookies__ forms etc. I even turned cookies off. The specific scenario is as follows: when I am done looking at a website.... like espn I x out of it and press home. If I then select another website all is well. However when I put down the kindle and the screen goes into power save- when I bring it back up and then go to the web- like Yahoo it brings up the unwanted website along with the one I selected. How do I keep this other website from loading? Thanke

Is there a way to conect your kindle fire to your pc and conpletly drain it out so it would not turn on or if otherwise turn on for less than 2 seconds on , would not charge.

How would I fix that?
